Rafael Shayo

Rafael is a bright and spirited 9-year-old boy who has faced more challenges than most children
his age. Born with cerebral palsy, Rafael’s journey has been filled with immense obstacles, but
his spirit remains unbroken. He is the youngest of nine children, and his family’s love for him is
boundless. Despite their best efforts, life with Rafael’s condition has been a constant struggle,
especially in a family with such limited resources.

Every day, Rafael mother carries him from place to place. Whether it’s to church, to the hospital
for check-ups, or even just visiting friends, she lifts him with tender care. At home, Rafael has
learned to shuffle around, but as he grows older and bigger, this becomes increasingly difficult
for his mother. Carrying him on her back, though done with love, has become a physical strain
that is taking its toll on her health and well-being.

The challenges are not just physical; they are emotional and social as well. Rafael’s limited
mobility means he often misses out on experiences that many children take for granted. He
cannot easily join his siblings in their daily activities, nor can he participate in school, which
makes him feel isolated and left out. For a boy who loves to interact and play, this separation
from his peers and from the world outside is particularly heartbreaking.
