When a person sustains a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), it is necessary to re-learn how to manage basic bodily functions such as the bladder and bowels. Checking the skin regularly to avoid potentially fatal pressure sores, as well as learning mobility skills, such as transferring to and from a wheelchair and doing ‘wheelies’ over rough ground, are essential to a person with disability health and mobility.
In Tanzania rehabilitation services for SCI patients are severely limited, often leaving individuals without essential knowledge and support upon discharge from hospitals.
Peer-Peer Education (PPE) is the name given to the grassroots transfer of skills and information from experienced, active wheelchair users to new persons with disability and/or less empowered people with disability in their communities. This innovative rehabilitation approach, pioneered by people with disability, facilitates an improved quality of life through the promotion of health, mobility, and independence.
Songambele Peer-To-Peer Education shows people with disability how to live healthy, active, and productive lives after injury, and provides support in dealing with the psychological effect of paralysis, thereby filling the gaps that the health service does not provide.
The Songambele PPE program fills this critical gap through Hospital Visits, Home visits, group discussions, and Peer Camps to provide;
